Basic Oral History Questions
The object for the first interview is to get a sense of the extended family that surrounded the person being interviewed. The questions can be modified to the uniqueness of the family’s history and that of the interviewee.

When did you come to live in the community where you live now?

Are you married? Do you have children?
·
Tell me something about your childhood family – did your parents also live here?
·
What were their names? Do you know your mother’s maiden name?

What are some of your special memories growing up in that community?

Where did you go to school and what was that like?
·

Where did the family shop and buy things they needed?
·
What were the names of y our parents?
·
Can you describe the house where you grew up?
·
Who was the teacher where you went to school?
·
Where did the family go to church?

What was life like for children?
·

What kinds of games did you play?

Did you have to do family chores?  What did you do?

Can you describe your favorite music when you were  a child?
·

Do you remember the World War?  Did anybody in the family have to leave and fight?

Did you know your grandparents?  What were their names?

Who was the oldest person you remember when you were a child?

Were any members of the family ever slaves and did they ever talk about it?

Did they ever mention the name of the old slave master?  Where did they live?
